Signs and Symptoms of Bipolar Disorder

There are different types of Bipolar Disorder. To meet the criteria for any type of Bipolar Disorder, you must experience alternating episodes of depression and mania or hypomania. A person with Bipolar II will experience episodes of hypomania and depression only, whereas a person with Bipolar I will have experienced at least one full-blown manic episode.

Knowing what symptoms to look for can help you identify Bipolar Disorder in yourself or someone else in your life. Often, this is the first step toward a professional assessment and treatment.

Signs and symptoms of a depressive episode include:

  • A down, low, or depressed mood.
  • Negative thoughts about yourself, others, or the world.
  • Feelings of worthlessness, hopelessness, or guilt.
  • Loss of interest in activities you’d usually enjoy.
  • Unexplained trouble concentrating or focusing.
  • Social isolation or withdrawal from others.
  • Sleeping too much or too little.
  • Slowed body movements.
  • Fatigue or lack of energy.
  • Changes in appetite.
  • Emotional numbness.
  • Excessive crying.

In many cases, people with Bipolar Disorder may seek help for depression first. In fact, it is very common for people with Bipolar Disorder to receive a misdiagnosis of unipolar depression before they get the correct diagnosis.

Manic and hypomanic episodes are a major contrast to depressive episodes. Like with depression, however, everyone with Bipolar Disorder experiences manic and hypomanic episodes differently.

Signs and symptoms of a manic episode include:

  • Increased energy.
  • Decreased need for sleep.
  • Erratic, risky, or impulsive behavior.
  • Feelings of irritability, euphoria, or excitement.
  • Talking more rapidly than usual.
  • Seeming “jumpy” or wired.
  • Paranoia or nervousness.
  • Excessive spending.
  • Racing thoughts.

Hypomania is a lower-level form of mania. If you are in a hypomanic episode, you may experience less intense symptoms of mania, such as increased energy, irritability, new ideas, and racing thoughts, without the more severe signs of a manic episode.

How Bipolar Disorder Affects Drug and Alcohol Abuse

Bipolar Disorder increases the likelihood that you will develop a substance use disorder. The symptoms of Bipolar Disorder are hard to live with, and it can take trial and error to find the right long-term treatment plan for your symptoms. In some cases, this can lead to self-medication through drugs and alcohol.

Unfortunately, substances come with more problems long-term. Drugs and alcohol may worsen symptoms of Bipolar Disorder, alongside other common effects, such as financial, occupational, legal, and interpersonal problems, heightened risk of accidents and injury, overdose, coma, physical health concerns that may or may not go away, and other consequences.

Our Thousand Oaks mental health program uses a wide range of therapies and supportive treatments or activities to address substance abuse and co-occurring concerns like Bipolar Disorder. These include but aren’t limited to CBT, DBT, outdoor adventure therapy, medication management, body movement, weekly support group meetings, and other resources, such as case management for clients with pending legal issues.

Our outpatient programs* provide comprehensive addiction and mental health treatment customized to fit your unique needs. During your admissions process, we’ll work with you to choose a starting level of care. No matter what care level you’re in, you’ll get a personalized treatment plan.

With that in mind, here are the levels of care offered at Omnia Recovery and a little bit about what to expect in each. If you have any questions about our programs, please contact us for more information.

*Referrals are available to clients in need of inpatient services.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

The partial hospitalization program at Omnia Recovery is our highest level of care. Clients in PHP attend therapy at our Bipolar Disorder rehab center 3-5 days per week. PHP might be suitable for you if you do not require hospitalization for mental health or substance abuse symptoms but need and are able to engage in a structured treatment schedule throughout the week.

The thorough nature of PHP makes it an ideal starting point for many clients. Benefits of PHP vs. an inpatient treatment program can include but aren’t limited to affordability, flexibility, and the ability to tend to external obligations while getting help.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The intensive outpatient program at Omnia Recovery has a level of intensity between PHP and traditional outpatient programs. IOP requires a significantly lower time commitment than PHP. While many of the same treatments are used, you will attend therapy for fewer total hours per week. This allows additional time for external obligations like work or school.

Outpatient Program

The traditional outpatient program at Omnia Recovery is our lowest level of care, so it is often used for continued support after you complete a higher level of care. Traditional outpatient programs require even fewer hours per week than IOP but can still include a combination of individual therapy, groups, and other treatments.
