Signs and Symptoms of Depression

There are different types of depression. However, many of the signs and symptoms you’ll notice are similar regardless of the specific condition or type. Looking out for the signs of depression in yourself can help you identify when there’s a problem so that you can get the help you need.

Common depression symptoms include but aren’t limited to the following:

  • Persistent feelings of sadness or emptiness
  • Feelings of hopelessness, worthlessness, or guilt
  • Irritability, frustration, or restlessness
  • Loss of interest in activities you’d usually enjoy
  • Recurrent thoughts of death or suicidal ideation
  • Sleeping too much or too little
  • Trouble concentrating or focusing
  • Slowed psychomotor activity
  • Low energy or fatigue
  • Appetite changes

Everyone experiences depression differently. Some people may excel at work or school but struggle behind closed doors; others will find it difficult to fulfill daily life obligations. Depression treatment in Thousand Oaks at Omnia Recovery can help.

Do I Need Treatment for Depression?

A major depressive episode is defined by depression symptoms that last for two weeks or more. If symptoms of depression occur for more than two weeks, it may be time to reach out for help. Our treatment programs address depression comprehensively and factor in your unique needs so that you can get to where you want to be.

You may need treatment for depression if:

  • Signs and symptoms of depression do not go away or worsen.
  • Depression symptoms interfere with your daily life or functioning.
  • Your quality of life is lower as a result of depression symptoms.
  • You aren’t happy with your current treatment plan.

Getting treatment for depression and other mental health concerns Omnia Recovery is a unique and special experience because it allows you to focus on healing and managing symptoms in a way that works for you. Treatment will help you identify possible underlying factors or symptom triggers that relate to depression and find effective coping skills.

addiction and mental health

Depression and Substance Abuse

If you live with depression, you are more likely to experience substance abuse. When you use unhealthy coping mechanisms like drugs and alcohol to cope with depression symptoms, it can lead to dependence, addiction, or otherwise problematic drinking and drug use. Often, this is called “self-medication.” In time, the reality is that mental health can worsen further as a result of substance use.

Using drugs and alcohol can lead to many consequences in and of themselves. These include but aren’t limited to social, occupational, educational, emotional, psychological, and physical health consequences. For example, heart problems, infection, overdose, coma, death, job loss, strained interpersonal or familial relationships, and accidents or injuries. Getting help allows you to avoid future effects or consequences of drug and alcohol use.

Ideally, substance abuse and co-occurring mental health concerns like depression should be addressed together in treatment when applicable. That way, you will develop the skills you need to manage both depression and substance abuse. Our addiction and depression treatment in Thousand Oaks can help.

Levels of Care at Omnia Recovery

Omni Recovery is a fully outpatient treatment center in Ventura County with the following levels of care available. Each level of care or treatment program we offer has a different time commitment and treatment schedule. During the admissions process, we’ll help you select a starting level of care and go over what to expect with you. We can provide you with a referral if you need a referral to an inpatient treatment center or medical detox.

Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP)

Partial hospitalization programs are ideal if you are looking for a thorough and structured treatment program but do not need the 24/7 support of inpatient care. PHP clients at Omnia Recovery attend treatment 3-5 days per week for a total of about four weeks. After PHP, you can transition to a lower level of care if you choose, which is often recommended to aid continued sobriety and mental health symptom management.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Intensive outpatient programs require a reduced time commitment compared to PHP while still providing support multiple days throughout the week. Since IOP requires fewer total treatment hours per week, this level of care offers increased flexibility for clients who need to fulfill external commitments like work or school while in treatment.

Outpatient Program

Standard outpatient is the least intensive level of care at Omnia Recovery. The time commitment is even lower than that of IOP, which provides optimal flexibility for external commitments. Usually, outpatient is used to help clients transition out of a higher level of care.

We also have an alumni program and network to help you sustain recovery after treatment. If you have any questions about our depression therapy programs or what they entail, don’t hesitate to reach out.
