Professional Narcan Training

Narcan is a safe medication that anyone can use to prevent an overdose. It can often be too late by the time that emergency services arrive, and it’s very important to know how to use Narcan by yourself.

Narcan is available in all 50 states, and if you are struggling with opioid addiction and receiving treatment at our drug addiction treatment center, we can help you with a co-prescription.

When individual clients and their friends and families have Narcan and know how to use it, they are able to save the life of someone at risk.

If you or someone close to you struggles with opioid addiction, call Omnia Recovery at 866-847-2066 to learn more about our Narcan training program. We will come to your home to teach your family how to properly use Narcan in emergency situations. Our team is here for you and your loved ones.

understanding Narcan

What is Narcan?

Narcan is a prescription medication that can help people who overdose on opioid drugs, including:

  • Prescription pain relievers
  • Heroin
  • Fentanyl

Narcan is one name for the drug naloxone. It comes in one of two forms that anyone can use without specific authorization or medical training, although it is certainly helpful to know how to work them. Most people are authorized to use a pre-filled nasal spray that is usually 4 mg and simple to perform in an emergency. Those with medical backgrounds might be able to get an injectable version.

When someone overdoses on opioids, Narcan can quickly reverse the effect by stopping the way opioids bind with opioid receptors in the body. Someone who has stopped breathing will resume normal breathing within a matter of minutes once Narcan is administered. For stronger drugs like fentanyl, several doses might be required.

Note: If someone is overdosing, but it’s not just on opioids, or it’s not opioids at all, it is still best to use Narcan if you don’t have that information. Narcan won’t hurt someone who isn’t on opioids, but it can save their life if they are.

know when Narcan is necessary

How to Know if Someone Needs Narcan

It’s important to know when someone might need Narcan. The signs of an opioid overdose can include the following:

  • Constricted, pinpoint pupils
  • A limp body
  • Slow breathing or no breathing
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Discolored skin, particularly blue on the lips or nails
  • Choking or gurgling sounds
  • Cold and clammy skin

If you or someone close to you needs help outside of an emergency, our team is available 24/7.

What To Do If Someone Overdoses

If you think someone is overdosing and needs Narcan, follow these steps:

  1. Call 911 immediately, even if that means delegating to someone around you
  2. Administer the Narcan
  3. Try to keep the person breathing and conscious
  4. Roll the person onto their side so they don’t choke
  5. Remain with them until emergency services arrive.

Tip: If you use Narcan on someone, make sure you also call for emergency help and remain with that person until help arrives. If it’s impossible for medical personnel to get to where you are, stay with that person for at least hours to ensure their breathing has returned to normal and they are safe.

Our Narcan Training Program

Knowing how important it is to have Narcan to prevent opioid overdose deaths is only the first step. The second step is knowing how to use it. This medication binds to the opioid receptors in the brain, which effectively stops any opioid-related prescription medications, heroin or fentanyl, from doing the same.

However, this profound intervention can only take place if the Narcan is distributed immediately and correctly. Omnia Recovery will come to your home to help train your whole family on how to properly use Narcan.

How We Help with Narcan Training

With Omnia Recovery, we provide several levels of care, including partial hospitalization programs, intensive outpatient treatment, and regular outpatient care.

We also work hard to address addiction, mental health, and dual diagnosis needs. As part of our desire to be innovative and our staff members’ personal understanding of addiction, we provide care that relates to your individual circumstances, and for many people, this can include group therapy alongside training for Narcan, both for clients and their families.

  • Administering Narcan rapidly through a nasal spray, the most common prescription given to non-medical personnel, can save a life
  • Narcan training can prepare you for the reality that the drug doesn’t stop withdrawal symptoms for someone who is struggling with an opioid dependency, and those withdrawal symptoms can still be serious and uncomfortable, but it does stop an overdose death
  • Training can also prepare you for a situation where you use Narcan, but the individual doesn’t actually have opioids in their system and instead has an overdose from another drug, in which case Narcan simply won’t have an effect, but it won’t cause any harm

A big part of our push to improve life skills involves understanding the reality of things like relapse, not just among yourself but among those friends and family closest to you. Feeling confident in your maintenance and use of Narcan in an emergency situation comes from truly understanding things like Good Samaritan laws, which can protect you in the event that you provide aid to someone on the street.

Moreover, training with Narcan can help you feel comfortable administering the nasal spray and understand who might be at risk and how the medication works.

No matter the substance with which you struggle, there is always room to learn more and to be as prepared as possible. Our Narcan distribution and training programs give you vital information that could help save someone’s life. With Omnia Recovery, we want you ready for anything, so let us help with our Narcan training program.

Individualized Care: Narcan Distribution

Narcan is readily available through many healthcare providers but comes at a hefty cost. Even individuals who are prescribed opioids might expect to pay a few hundred dollars out of pocket to get their hands on a lifesaving drug for themselves or someone else.

Only a few states, like Ohio, have initiated programs to rectify this and make Narcan more readily available, free of charge, in things like vending machines. Still, this doesn’t provide training for Narcan; it only tackles the Narcan distribution aspect of a two-pronged issue.

With Omnia Recovery, we understand that real treatment, particularly for severe opioid addiction, means being prepared for anything. As part of our push to provide treatment reimagined, we have decided to offer individualized care that incorporates Narcan distribution and training for Narcan such that you are able to have it and use it if necessary.

Why is Narcan Distribution Important?

Narcan distribution gives Narcan kits to opioid users, their family members, friends, or anyone else who might be in a position to save someone in need.

  • Studies have found that Narcan distribution in states like Massachusetts reduced opioid-related overdoses without increasing opioid abuse by eleven percent
  • Large-scale studies have confirmed that where people have received training for Narcan and Narcan distribution, they can decrease opioid-related overdose deaths by fourteen percent
  • With increased Narcan training and Narcan distribution, everyday individuals and emergency personnel have the ability to potentially avoid 21% of overdoses related to opioids
